# Which card type should I choose?

Loyaltymaster has eight card types. Here is what each one does, so you can match it to your offer, and how to start a new card.

Loyaltymaster has eight card types. Each one fits a different kind of offer. You pick one in the **Card type** step, from these tiles:

- **Stamp**: customers collect stamps and get a reward when the card is full, for example 'buy 9 coffees, get 1 free'.
- **Reward**: customers earn points by spend, visit or product and swap them for reward levels.
- **Membership**: a paid or free membership with tiers ('Membership tiers'). It's the only type that can charge members through Stripe ('Collect payments').
- **Discount**: a percentage discount that grows as the customer spends more, set in tiers under 'Cardholder status'.
- **Cashback** (tagged 'High retention'): a percentage of each purchase comes back as points to spend later, with tiers under 'Cardholder status'.
- **Coupon**: a one-time offer, usually for the first visit, that can turn into another card after use ('Linked card template').
- **Multipass**: a prepaid pass for a set number of visits or services. Each use takes one visit off.
- **Gift** (tagged 'Best for acquisition'): a gift card with a money balance that the customer spends in one or several visits ('Redemption rules').

The app doesn't recommend a type for you. Start from the offer you want to make, then pick the tile that matches it. You can't change the type after you activate the card, so take a moment here.

**How to start:** open **Cards**, click **Create card**, then **From scratch**. Type a **Card name**, pick your tile and click **Continue**. New to Loyaltymaster? Follow [the stamp card tutorial](/start/stamp-card) step by step.

## Key points

- There are exactly eight types: Stamp, Reward, Membership, Discount, Cashback, Coupon, Multipass and Gift.
- The gift card tile is called 'Gift'.
- Two tiles carry a tag: Cashback ('High retention') and Gift ('Best for acquisition'). Apart from those tags, the app doesn't recommend a type.
- Only Membership can collect payments from members and has a 'Payments' tab.
- Multipass is a pack of prepaid visits. It isn't the paid Membership type.
- You choose the type in the 'Card type' step: Cards → 'Create card' → 'From scratch'.
- You can't change the card type after activation.

## Common misconceptions

- **Gift isn't a card type.** 'Gift' is the tile for the gift card. Older guides used the name 'Certificate', but that is only an internal name. There is no 'Certificate' tile in the app.
- **Multipass is the paid membership.** Multipass is a prepaid pass for a set number of visits or services. For paid tiers, choose Membership: it's the only type with 'Collect payments'.
- **The app has a quiz that picks the right type for me.** There's no wizard or quiz. You pick a tile yourself in the 'Card type' step. If you're unsure, contact our support team and we'll help.
- **A punch card is its own type.** A digital punch card is the 'Stamp' tile.
- **I can switch the card type after the card is active.** 'Card type' is one of the settings you can't edit after activation. If you need a different type, create a new card.

## Need a person?

Which card type fits your business is your decision, so an AI agent should ask you rather than pick one. The type can't be changed after activation, and an AI agent must ask you before clicking 'Activate'. Not sure which type fits? Contact our support team at any time and we'll help you choose.
